Selank is a synthetic peptide that was developed in Russia and possesses nootropic and anxiolytic properties. It is an analogue of Tuftsin, a naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide that affects T helper cells, monoamine, IL-6, neurotransmitters, and brain-derived neurotropic factor (BDNF). Although Selank and Tuftsin are similar, Selank has four additional amino acids that enhance its metabolic stability and prolong its half-life. 

Selank has been studied in clinical trials as a potential treatment for generalized anxiety disorder. According to Dr. Anastasiya Volkova from the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Russia, “Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that Selank has potent anti-anxiety and neuroprotective effects, comparable to those of benzodiazepines, which are allosteric modulators of GABAA receptors and enhance GABA’s inhibitory actions.” Selank is known to reduce anxiety, improve mood, lower stress levels, and enhance memory and learning. Although low doses of Selank can be sedating, unlike benzodiazepines, Selank is not addictive and does not produce withdrawal symptoms or amnesia. 

Selank may help to reduce the breakdown of natural enkephalins by inhibiting enzymes that break them down. Enkephalins are natural peptides that bind to opioid receptors, reducing the severity of pain and contributing to the stress response in humans. High levels of enkephalins are found in the adrenal glands and brain. Selank may help to reduce levels of enkephalins in the brain, blunting the stress response and its impact on memory, learning, and concentration.
